Google AI Overviews Expand To More Users
At Google I/O, the company announced a major expansion of its AI Overviews feature in Google Search. AI Overviews are now accessible in more than 200 countries and territories, supporting over 40 different languages.
Initially launched in over 100 regions back in October, Google has now doubled that reach, making AI Overviews available to significantly more users around the world. This expansion aims to provide enhanced search experiences to a global audience.
Alongside geographic growth, Google has also introduced support for several new languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay, Urdu, and others, making AI Overviews more accessible to non-English speakers.
You can view the complete list of supported countries and regions in this official help document.
1.5 Billion Monthly Users and Industry-Leading Speed
Google also shared that AI Overviews now serve 1.5 billion monthly users. “We’re delivering this at the speed people expect from Google Search — AI Overviews offer the fastest AI responses in the industry,” said Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search.
This expansion aligns with recent observations of Google quietly testing the feature in regions where it wasn’t previously available.
AI Overviews Drive More Searches and Higher-Quality Engagement
Google reports that the introduction of AI Overviews has led to a 10% increase in the number of searches users perform. “Once people experience AI Overviews, they tend to perform more of these types of queries — and what’s especially exciting is that this growth continues to build over time,” said Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search.
This 10% increase was determined through an experiment comparing two user groups over time: one group that sees AI Overviews and another that does not. The comparison focused on query volumes for the subset of searches that typically trigger AI Overviews.
According to Google, users are more inclined to explore deeper and interact more when AI Overviews are available. The added context and guidance provided by these overviews inspire more follow-up queries and engagement.
Google also noted that search results enhanced with AI Overviews tend to generate higher-quality clicks. Users who arrive on websites through AI-enhanced results tend to spend more time on those sites compared to visitors from traditional search results. “People are engaging more deeply with the content,” Reid explained.
Google has also upgraded the technology behind AI Overviews. They now run on a custom version of Gemini 2.5, the latest iteration of Google’s powerful AI model. This update not only improves response quality and speed but also enables AI Overviews to handle more complex and nuanced queries.
By now, many users have likely seen AI Overviews in action. These enhanced results typically appear at the top of the search page, summarizing relevant information and offering quick, AI-generated insights that help guide further exploration.
AI Overviews look. Here is how AI Overviews look, but I suspect most of you have seen these by now:
Why do we care? Google is making it clear, AI Overviews are not going anywhere. More and more Google searchers are going to see it in more countries, more territories and more languages. While it is not supported everywhere just yet, Google does continue to expand these to more searchers.
Plus, the results should be higher quality, but I am waiting to hear from the community if those results are better or not.
