SEO Monitoring: A Complete Guide to Tools & Key Metrics
SEO monitoring means checking how well a website is doing in search engines. It helps us understand if our SEO work is helping the website show up better in search results. This process includes looking at things like free (organic) traffic, how many visitors turn into customers, and if there are any technical issues with the website.
Why Is It Important to Monitor SEO Performance?
Watching your SEO performance is key because it shows what is working and what needs fixing. This helps us make smart changes to improve the website.
By keeping track, we can:
- See how SEO helps the business grow and prove it’s worth the time and money.
- Find technical problems early so the website doesn’t lose its place in search results.
- Learn which pages or topics bring the most visitors, so we can make more like them.
- Watch what competitors are doing and find new ways to improve.
Using real data instead of guessing gives us a better plan to bring more traffic and grow sales over time.
How to Start Watching Your SEO Progress
To start checking how your SEO is doing, choose the right things to measure, use the right tools, and focus on data that helps you improve.
Here’s how to begin in three simple steps:
1. Pick the Right SEO Numbers to Track:
Choose the most important SEO numbers (called KPIs) that match your business goals. Not every number is useful to every website, so focus on what matters most.
Here are six SEO numbers worth watching:
- Organic traffic: Shows how many people visit your site through unpaid search results. It also helps you find out which pages get the most attention.
- Keyword rankings: Tells you how high your site appears in search results for your chosen words. It helps you know if people can find you.
- SERP features: Shows how often your content shows up in special search boxes like “People Also Ask” or “Featured Snippets.” These can bring more clicks.
- Organic conversions: Tells you how many visitors from search engines do something important on your site, like buy something or sign up.
- Organic CTR (click-through rate): Tells you what percentage of people click on your link after seeing it in search results. If this number is low, your titles or descriptions may need work.
- Backlinks: Shows how many websites are linking to yours. More good-quality links usually mean better search engine trust.
You don’t need to watch all these numbers. Just pick the ones that matter most to your site.
For example:
- A small site trying to build trust may focus on backlinks and mentions.
- An online shop focused on sales should track conversions and income from search visitors.
2. Start Collecting the Right Data:
You’ll need tools to gather the SEO numbers you picked. The most useful ones are Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, and Semrush.
Google Search Console (GSC):
GSC is a free tool from Google. It shows how your site performs in search results.
To check your click rate and average position:
Go to “Performance” > “Search results”.
You’ll see four main numbers: Total clicks, Total impressions, Average CTR, and Average position. Turn them all on to see the full picture. You can also scroll down in the same report to see what search terms bring visitors to your site.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4):
GA4 is another free tool. It shows how people find and use your website.
To check how much traffic you get from search engines:
Go to “Reports” > “Acquisition” > “Traffic acquisition”, then click on “Organic Search”.
To see which pages keep visitors interested, go to “Reports” > “Engagement” > “Pages and screens”. Look at the column called “Average engagement time”. These are your best-performing pages, and they can guide your future content.
Semrush:
Semrush is a paid tool that puts a lot of SEO info in one place. Here are four helpful tools inside Semrush:
-
Position Tracking: Lets you track your keyword rankings daily.
Start a project, add your keywords, and see where you rank and how visible you are. It also shows which special features (like snippets) your pages appear in. -
Backlink Analytics: Gives a full view of who is linking to your site.
Enter your domain to see your Authority Score, total backlinks, and whether your links are increasing or dropping. -
Site Audit: Scans your site for over 140 problems that might hurt your SEO.
If your content and links look good but SEO results are still weak, the problem might be technical. Run the tool, and you’ll get a health score and a list of issues.
Start by fixing “Errors,” then move to “Warnings” and “Notices.” Fixing these technical issues can lead to better search rankings and more visitors.
3. Set Up Your SEO Monitoring Dashboard:
Once we have picked the right SEO metrics and collected the data, the next step is to set up a dashboard. This will help us keep track of everything in one place.
We can start with a basic spreadsheet. Just make columns for each metric and add updates each week.
Another option is to use Looker Studio (it used to be called Google Data Studio). This tool lets us make visual dashboards. It can pull data from GA4, Google Search Console, Google Ads, Semrush, and other platforms.
If we want something more advanced, Semrush’s “My Reports” is a great choice. This tool does everything automatically. It can:
- Bring in data from all Semrush tools
- Update numbers in real time
- Send reports to team members on a schedule
- Let us design dashboards based on different goals
- Work with GA4, GSC, Google Ads, HubSpot, Shopify, and more
A good way to begin is by making a Monthly SEO Report. This comes with common SEO metrics already added. But we can change it to fit what we need. We can add or remove parts, write notes, and set the time range to match our review schedule.
Once the report is ready, just click “Generate PDF report” at the top right.
We can also set the report to update itself—every day, week, or month—and send it to as many email addresses as needed.
