Google Lens Integration For YouTube Shorts: Search Within Videos
Google Lens Now Integrated with YouTube Shorts
You can now search for anything you see in a YouTube Short—directly from your phone—thanks to the integration of Google Lens.
How It Works:
Here’s how to use this new feature:
- Pause a Short by tapping the screen.
- Tap “Lens” in the top menu.
- Tap, circle, or highlight the item you want to search.
Whether it’s identifying an object, translating text, or discovering more about a location, search results will appear right above the video. When you’re done, just swipe down to resume watching.
This feature works seamlessly with products, plants, animals, landmarks, and even text. You can also translate captions in real time as you watch.
Some searches may include AI Overviews, offering deeper insights and context about the item or scene you’re exploring.
Example from Google:
“If you’re watching a Short filmed in a location that you want to visit, you can select a landmark to identify it and learn more about the destination’s culture and history.”

Important Limitations to Keep in Mind
While Google Lens on YouTube Shorts is a powerful new feature, there are a few important restrictions:
- No Support for Tagged or Sponsored Content:
- As Google states:
- Organic Results Only:
- No Facial Recognition:
- Mobile Only:
Lens won’t work on Shorts that include YouTube Shopping affiliate tags or paid product promotions.
“Tagging a product via YouTube Shopping will disable the Lens search.”
Search results are limited to organic content—no ads will appear when using Lens.
Google confirms that Lens does not use facial recognition technology. However, it may still show results for public figures or celebrities when relevant.
This feature is currently available only on iOS and Android devices.
Google has begun rolling out the beta to all users this week, though no exact regional release dates have been announced yet.
What This Means for Marketers
The integration of Google Lens into YouTube Shorts opens up new possibilities for content creators and marketers:
- Increased Engagement Through Visuals:
- Free Exposure for Travel & Hospitality Brands:
- Enhanced Value for Educational Content:
Eye-catching visuals in your Shorts can now do more than grab attention—they can spark viewer interaction and searches, leading to deeper engagement.
Locations featured in Shorts can be identified via Lens, offering free visibility and educational value for businesses in tourism, hospitality, and culture.
Creators in education can benefit as viewers use Lens to explore and learn more about topics covered in their videos.
However, there’s a trade-off for monetized content:
The restriction on affiliate tags and sponsored product promotions means creators relying on YouTube Shopping must rethink their strategies. Striking the right balance between creating discoverable content and maintaining revenue streams will be key moving forward.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Visual Search in Video
The integration of Google Lens into YouTube Shorts marks a major shift in how people engage with video content. Viewers can now search within videos—not just for them.
For marketers and creators, this changes the game:
- Visual Elements Are the New Keywords:
- Visibility vs. Monetization:
- Plan for Searchable Moments:
Every product, location, or piece of text in your video can become a searchable gateway. Strategic visuals now play a critical role in discoverability.
With monetized Shorts (like those using affiliate tags) excluded from Lens functionality, creators face a new challenge:
Do you prioritize visibility or revenue?
Finding a balance between the two will be essential.
As viewers shift into the role of visual searchers, creators should start designing Shorts with intentional, recognizable visuals that invite exploration.
