IndexNow Assists with Quicker Indexing of Shopping Ads and Product Updates
Amazon and Shopify now support IndexNow.
IndexNow, an indexing protocol developed by Microsoft Bing’s search team, enables real-time indexing and structured data support. This ensures that products and shopping ads remain up to date with Bing and other search engines that utilize the IndexNow protocol.
Microsoft also announced that Amazon and Shopify have integrated IndexNow into their platforms.
Regarding shopping and IndexNow, Microsoft stated, “by implementing IndexNow with the schema below, you can skip the need for a separate merchant feed, streamlining how your updates get discovered.” This facilitates keeping price updates, stock levels, and new product launches current within Bing Search and other search engines using IndexNow.
Using structured product data like schema.org/Product alongside IndexNow helps keep product information more current. According to Microsoft, this benefits:
- Organic search results.
- Shopping surfaces powered by search engines.
- Selected ad experiences that depend on indexed page content.
Microsoft recommends including the following fields in structured data:
- dateModified.
- title (name in JSON-LD).
- description.
- price (list or retail price).
- link (product landing page URL).
- image link (image in JSON-LD).
- shipping (essential for Germany and Austria).
- id (a unique product identifier).
- brand
- gtin
- mpn
- datePublished
These are optional fields:
- Category (helps group products for search and shopping platforms).
- seller (recommended for marketplaces or resellers).
- itemCondition (e.g., NewCondition, UsedCondition).
How to add support:
Platforms like Shopify have built-in support for IndexNow. For custom e-commerce platforms, follow these steps:
- Add structured data using schema.org to product pages—this should include fields such as price, availability, product name, and unique identifiers.
- Enable IndexNow if the CMS or platform does not already support it.
Amazon and Shopify with IndexNow:
While Shopify sites currently have built-in support for IndexNow, Microsoft announced that Amazon plans to adopt IndexNow soon.
Microsoft stated, “Amazon plans to begin adopting IndexNow in mid-June, enabling its systems to more efficiently detect changes across the web—helping reduce unnecessary crawling and keeping its infrastructure aligned with the most current content available.”
Shopify now supports IndexNow, with Amazon adding it soon.
