The Most Mentioned Domains for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews Across 78.6M Searches
The search landscape has permanently shifted. Traditional ten-blue-links are no longer the default, and generative AI engines are now the primary touchpoint for millions of consumer and B2B queries. Curious about which websites AI assistants reference the most in 2026? I set out to find the most frequently cited sources across major AI systems, offering actionable insight into which sites are being prioritized and trusted by each platform.
Understanding these citation patterns isn’t just a vanity metric; it is a core component of modern SEO. Knowing where AI pulls its answers allows brands to reverse-engineer their content strategies, ensuring they remain visible and relevant in an increasingly zero-click search environment.

Analyzing 78.6M Searches Across Leading AI Models
To do this, I analyzed the top 10 websites cited in Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, using massive datasets from Ahrefs Brand Radar and proprietary tracking tools. This includes insights from:
- Google AI Overviews: ~76.7 million results
- ChatGPT Prompts: 957,000 prompts
- Perplexity Prompts: 953,500 prompts
All tracked in early 2026 to reflect the latest algorithmic updates.
Side note: Brand Radar isn’t your typical LLM visibility tool. Unlike basic rank trackers of the past, it monitors a vast volume of queries across various AI systems. Think of it more like a Site Explorer for AI-driven search, letting you analyze product, service, or brand visibility and benchmark against competitors with complete transparency.
Mention Share for Top Domains Across AI Assistants
Mention Share measures how often the underlying model chooses a domain to construct its answer. By tracking this, we can see the raw dependency each AI has on specific data sources. Here’s a comparison across AI assistants:
While Wikipedia leads across the board as the ultimate foundational training set, its prominence varies drastically by engine:
- ChatGPT: References Wikipedia the most (16.3%)
- Perplexity: References Wikipedia in 12.5% of responses
- Google AI Overviews: References Wikipedia in 8.4% of results
This data proves that while maintaining a strong factual footprint (like a Wikipedia or Wikidata presence) is still vital, relying solely on it is an outdated tactic. Brands must diversify where their foundational data lives.
Platform-Specific Source Preferences (Google vs. ChatGPT vs. Perplexity)
Interestingly, YouTube ranks highest in Perplexity (16.1%) and AI Overviews (9.5%), but doesn’t even make the top 10 in ChatGPT. This highlights a critical difference in content type preference—Perplexity and Google lean heavily toward multimedia and instructional sources, while ChatGPT tends to favor text-based information.
Platforms like Reddit and Quora appear almost exclusively in AI Overviews (7.4% and 3.6%, respectively). This suggests that Google is far more inclined to elevate user-generated content (UGC) and human experience, a continuation of their recent algorithm updates designed to highlight “hidden gems” and first-hand perspectives, unlike ChatGPT and Perplexity.
On the flip side, ChatGPT heavily cites news outlets like Reuters, Apple News (AP), and AS.com, with visibility ranging from 4% to 2.6%. These sources don’t feature as prominently in Google or Perplexity, reinforcing ChatGPT’s bias toward authoritative, vetted news media for real-time factual queries.
In the highly scrutinized health and medical space (YMYL – Your Money or Your Life), Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic appear dominantly in AI Overviews, while ChatGPT and Perplexity omit them from their top 10 entirely. However, Perplexity surfaces more niche health sites like Tua Saúde and Alodokter, indicating a broader, possibly localized, scope of sources rather than relying strictly on legacy US-based medical institutions.
Impression Share & Potential Reach: Measuring True AI Visibility
It’s important to note: not all citations are equal. Some topics and sources are referenced in high-volume searches, while others only appear in niche or deeply long-tail queries.
To better understand the tangible ROI, visibility, and impact of these citations, we looked beyond raw mention counts. Since there’s still no standardized “search volume” API exclusively for AI assistant prompts, we used traditional Google search volume as a proxy to estimate how prominent or visible these citations might actually be to consumers.
We applied two key data-driven metrics:
- Impression Share: The number of times a site is cited, weighted by the Google search volume of those keywords, reflecting how visible the source is in high-demand queries.
- Potential Reach: An estimate of the total exposure a site could achieve based on how frequently it appears in high-traffic searches over time.
This approach offers a much more realistic view of which sites aren’t just cited frequently, but are actually visible in high-impact, high-interest AI responses that drive bottom-line growth.
