WordPress Finally Takes Steps To Integrate AI

WordPress has announced the launch of a dedicated AI Team aimed at streamlining the development and integration of artificial intelligence within the WordPress core. Mirroring the structure of the existing Performance Team, this new group will focus on building canonical plugins that allow users to test emerging features before determining whether and how they should be incorporated into the core platform.

The team’s mission is to establish a clear strategic direction, accelerate the transition from testing to deployment, and serve as a centralized hub for collaboration on AI-related ideas and initiatives.

The AI Team will feature two Google engineers: Felix Arntz and Pascal Birchler. Arntz, a Senior Software Engineer at Google, is an active contributor to the WordPress core and various plugins, and has previously led the WordPress Performance Team.

Pascal Birchler, a Developer Relations Engineer and WordPress core committer, recently led a project to integrate the Model Context Protocol (MCP) with WordPress via WP-CLI.

The WordPress announcement called it an important step:
